Tablas To Drums

This book is written for western drum set players who want to learn about the tabla, and tabla players who want to learn about the drum set. It is essentially a translation of Indian classical tabla language to western drum set notation. This book covers western concepts such as Max Roach's approach to four bar phrasing, Indian concepts such as kaida's, tipalli, rela's, and tihai's, and drum beats composed by Mark Johnson based on both idioms.
Traditionally, tabla is passed down orally from a guru, or teacher, to a disciple. The rhythms of the tabla are communicated by way of syllables, which represent the sounds of the tabla. In this book, the rhythms of the tabla are notated for drum set with classical western notation in conjunction with the syllables.
